In pottery, “throwing” is the process of shaping clay on a spinning wheel.

The clay is centred on the wheel, which rotates at speed, and the potter uses their hands to gently pull, press, and shape it into forms like bowls, or vases. The term doesn’t mean “throwing” in the usual sense—it comes from the older meaning of “to throw on the wheel,” meaning to place and shape the clay while it spins.
